"This book describes the discovery of Assyrian sites in Nineveh, Iraq. It intersperses journeys and descriptions of people and places with accounts of archaeological discoveries. Layard's romantic view of the countryside and local people blended with his rediscovery of Assyria." - From the Introduction by Stephanie Dalley

The second of Layard’s monumental works in the Gorgias Classic Archaeological Reprints series, this book includes the archaeologist’s observations of Chaldean Christians in Kurdistan, the Yezidis, as well as an exploration into the life of the ancient Assyrians.

Sir Austin Henry Layard (1817-1894) was a polymath of high degree. Apart from his well-known travels, he was also a scholar of art history, cuneiform, and a draughtsman, as well as an unofficial diplomat. Educated at Oxford, he conducted excavations at Nimrud and Nineveh during his extended tours in what is now Iraq. He was a member of Gladstone’s Privy Council and a trustee of the British Museum.
