Noting that no comprehensive study of ancient Assyrian hymns had been undertaken, Cumming set about to compare the accessible Assyrian hymns from ancient Mesopotamia (ancient Iraq) with those of the Hebrew Bible. Beginning with Hebrew examples, primarily from the Psalms, Cumming categorizes them into hymns of praise, eschatological hymns, nature hymns, and hymns in praise of sacred institutions. These he adroitly compares with Akkadian hymns that introduce prayers and those embodying self-laudations of the gods. In his analysis of the field, Cumming considers the role of the supreme god in each set of literature, focusing on the supreme god among the gods as wise, powerful, merciful creator, king and judge. These facets of the divine world of the ancient Near East still contain much useful information for the student of the history of ancient religions.
Charles Gordon Cumming (b. 1885) completed his Ph.D. at Columbia University and went on to teach at Bangor Theological Seminary in Maine. He was the father of a somewhat more famous son, Robert Denoon Cumming, who taught at Columbia University.
