The classic exploration of Syriac liturgical melodies, the work of Dom Jeannin has no rivals. Homilies in strophic form, the popular poetry of the fifth-century qole, antiphonal psalms, anthems, melismatic hymns or litanies, and melodies from Mosul are just part of the service music and hymnody discussed in the introduction and presented with their melodies in Syriac.

Grigore’s long-awaited grammar of the Arabic spoken in Mardin will not disappoint linguistic scholars interested in the dialects of Arabic. Written in French, Grigore’s treatment begins with some background on Mardin and its people. This region, located in southeast Turkey, has a distinctive geography and history, as well as a distinctive dialect of Arabic. Placing the Arabic of Mardin on the family tree of Arabic languages, Grigore systematically treats the distinctive phonetics of the region, the morphology of the verbal and nominal syntax, numerals and the other parts of speech. Following this thorough treatment, the syntax of the preposition and prepositional phrases are considered. In relation to Kurdish and Turkish, Grigore finds that the Arabic of Mardin participates in a dynamic pluralism that has led to a rich lexical and grammatical tradition.

George Grigore obtained his education at the University of Bucharest, where he currently teaches in the department of Oriental Languages. He has an impressive roster of publications, his most well-noted being his translation of the Quran into Romanian.
