Founded in 1976, the American Journal of Ancient History was the first journal in any English-speaking country wholly devoted to ancient history. From the start this peer-reviewed journal has been open to contributions of any reasonable length from all countries and in all major scholarly languages. The central interest of the Journal has always been Greek and Roman history—but taken in a sense wide enough to encompass eras ranging from the Bronze Age to later antiquity, across all the relevant geographic areas—and historiography (both ancient and modern). Review-discussions of especially important books on ancient history are featured from time to time. Ernst Badian founded AJAH at Harvard University, and edited and published the Journal for twenty-five years, until 2001; T. Corey Brennan launched a second series of the Journal at Rutgers University in 2002. Editorial board members are W.R. Connor, Erich Gruen, Sabine MacCormack, Christopher Mackay and Stephen V. Tracy. In 2007 AJAH entered into a production and distribution partnership with Gorgias Press to guarantee its timely appearance and to maximize its exposure in the scholarly world.
The journal will be produced in one volume annually, beginning in 2008. The price for the subscription is $50 per issue; institutional and individual rates are the same.
