The New Syriac Primer by George Kiraz
A truly useful introduction to the Syriac language is a rare find. This practical initiation to the study of the ancient language of the Christian church speaks with clarity and authority. A fruitful integration of scholarly introduction and practical application, this primer is more than a simple grammar or syntactic introduction to the language. Written in a style designed for beginners, Kiraz avoids technical language and strives for a reader-friendly inductive approach. Readings from actual Syriac texts allow the student to experience the language first hand and the basics of the grammar of the language are ably explained. The book comes with downloadable material so that readers may listen to all reading sentences and text passages in the book.

Introduction to the Grammar of Hebrew Poetry in Byzantine Palestine by Michael Rand
This book investigates the interaction between grammatical norms and poetic technique on the basis of a corpus selected from the oeuvre of the payyetan Eleazar be-rabbi Qillir. As a basis for this investigation, a descriptive/comparative analysis of the Qillirian dialect is offered. The first portion of the work is a grammar devoted mainly to morphology and syntax. The second portion of the work is an investigation of the poetic norms, as well as rhetorical techniques employed by Qillir, together with an assessment of their impact on the grammar. The overall aim of the project is to design an analytical framework within which a self-conscious poetic dialect might be investigated.

This work is the exposition of an Alexandrian Muslim Jew Sa’id Ibn Hasan, at the turn of 14th century. Sa’id was a Jewish convert to Islam who felt compelled to record for posterity his understanding of the truth of Islam over Judaism. In his view he was doing a service to his former religion through this work, which offers its reader insight into the complex world of conversion and religious polemic in the late middle ages. Hasan was a zealot for his new faith and believed that it should be aggressively installed as the only religion. In this way his Kitab is a window into a strain of fanatical Islam found in Egypt at this time. Dr. Sidney A. Weston edits this text for the first time and offers an English translation and notes, making it accessible to the scholar and enthusiast alike.

Sidney Adams Weston was a noted Bible Instructor and Orientalist. He earned a doctorate degree from Yale University and was a participating member of the American Oriental Society and the National Association of Biblical Instructors. He also served as Editor for the Congregational Publishing Society in Boston, MA, and was the editor for The Pilgrim Hymnal.
