Buy this book together with A History of the Holy Eastern Church: The Patriarchate of Alexandria by John Neale
Originally written to inspire sympathy for their Eastern Christian compatriots among the membership of the Church of England, Howard’s study has become a touchstone for those seeking a sense of antique Christian liturgical practice. After providing a history of the “St. Thomas Christians,” the Orthodox Christians of India, up until the mid-nineteenth century, Howard presents English translations of six different anaphorae in use in Christendom: namely, those of St. James, St. Peter, The Twelve Apostles, Mar Dionysius Barsalibi, Mar Xystus, and Mar Evannis. +The first volume of an ambitious project to document the history of the early church, this is one of John Mason Neale’s crowning achievements. Meticulously researched, Neale’s treatment of the early church in Egypt is among the required reading of any student of oriental Christianity still today. Beginning with the traditions of St. Mark’s foundation of the Egyptian church, the developments of Christianity are traced up through the controversies associated with Nestorius and the Council of Chalcedon. In Neale’s characteristically readable style, the early stages of Eastern Christianity and its noteworthy figures are presented here with historical accuracy and authority. The origins of monasticism, the troubles and triumphs of St. Athanasius, the Arian heresy, and the ecumenical councils are all treated in this important study of the church in Egypt. Save $40.09

The Acts of Saint George and the Story of his Father by George Kiraz
One of the most enduring of the saints, Saint George has seldom failed to capture the imagination of Christian readers, both ancient and modern. The Acts of Saint George, originally written in Greek, quickly spread to many linguistic traditions in the church of late antiquity. Presented here in vocalized Syriac and Arabic, the original text of the Acts is made easily accessible to readers of these languages. A detailed introduction in English summarizes the hagiography for those unacquainted with the Semitic languages. The account follows the hagiographic practice of describing the trials, steadfast faith, and martyrdom of the saint. Also included is the story of the father of Saint George, recorded in Syriac.

John Rufus and the World Vision of Anti-Chalcedonean Culture by
This book deals with the works of the anti-Chalcedonian hagiographer, John Rufus, and traces the basic motives behind the opposition against the council of Chalcedon in the fifth century through an attempt to reconstruct a specific anti-Chalcedonian culture. As part of the eastern monastic culture, it considered itself a counter-culture guarding purity of ascetic conduct and orthodoxy from being defiled by the perverseness of the majority. Reading John Rufus' hagiography, we find ourselves in the midst of a cosmological warfare between good and evil, where the great heroes of the anti-Chalcedonian movement enter into history as God's warriors against the rebellion of demons and heretics.

A Syriac Lexicon by Michael Sokoloff
The second edition of Carl Brockelmann's Lexicon Syriacum, published in 1928, is a highly reputable Syriac dictionary. However, its Latin language and the ordering of words according to triliteral Semitic roots make its use difficult for most students and scholars. This revised edition by Sokoloff renders meanings in English, arranges words alphabetically, and includes many useful tools on a CD.

This presentation of several Eastern liturgies in English contains important information for the devotee of historic Christian liturgies. Originally written to inspire sympathy for their Eastern Christian compatriots among the membership of the Church of England, Howard’s study, already démodé as it was going to press, has become a touchstone for those seeking a sense of antique Christian liturgical practice. Also included are the Ordo Communis, the order of the communion service which is essentially common to all of the traditions cited, the Gospels appointed for special occasions, seals and sedras. Despite its age, this resource still offers fruitful ground for those studying the relatively unchanging nature of the anaphorae.

George Broadley Howard was a clergyman in the Church of England and served as Assistant Chaplain in the Diocese of Madras.
