Buy this book together with Selected Dialogue Poems [Sugyotho Mgabyotho] by Sebastian Brock
Originally published in two volumes, this edition of the Arabic translation of the Pentateuch stands as one of Lagarde’s lasting contributions to biblical scholarship. Critical editions make frequent reference to this work. Included are two translations of Genesis into Arabic, along with a single version of the remaining pentateuchal books, also in Arabic. The first translation of Genesis represents the tradition of the Paris Polyglot, translated directly from the Hebrew, while the second is a cantena text from the Syriac tradition, representing two-thirds of Genesis. Lagarde’s study provides a valuable text-critical tool and easy access to the Arabic versions of the material. +Dialogue poetry is a genre that began in ancient Sumer and continues in rich fashion in the Syriac tradition. Sebastian Brock has selected an edition of twenty six dialogue poems: between the Church and Zion; Abraham and Isaac; Joseph and Benjamin; the body and the soul; Joseph and Mary; the thief and the cherub; Mary and the Magi; the church and the believers; the angel and Mary; among the months of the year; between the angel and Zachariah; death and Satan; Jesus and the faithful; the two thieves; Jesus and John; the sinful woman and Satan; Abel and Cain; and wheat and gold.Save $42.77

Eight Syriac Mimre On Biblical Themes by
Sebastian Brock gives in this text six poems (mimre) on various Old and New Testament themes. The texts go back to the fifth or sixth century and their authorship is mostly unknown, although one may be by Saint Ephrem. The mimre are: one on the murder of Abel (Genesis 4); one on Abraham and Sara in Egypt (Genesis 12); two on Abraham and Isaac (Genesis 22); one on the prophet Elijah (I Kings 17); one on Mary and Joseph (Matthew 1:19); one on the sinful woman (Luke 7: 16-50). Each poem is given with an introduction (also in Syriac).

Introduction to the Grammar of Hebrew Poetry in Byzantine Palestine by Michael Rand
This book investigates the interaction between grammatical norms and poetic technique on the basis of a corpus selected from the oeuvre of the payyetan Eleazar be-rabbi Qillir. As a basis for this investigation, a descriptive/comparative analysis of the Qillirian dialect is offered. The first portion of the work is a grammar devoted mainly to morphology and syntax. The second portion of the work is an investigation of the poetic norms, as well as rhetorical techniques employed by Qillir, together with an assessment of their impact on the grammar. The overall aim of the project is to design an analytical framework within which a self-conscious poetic dialect might be investigated.

A Syriac Lexicon by Michael Sokoloff
The second edition of Carl Brockelmann's Lexicon Syriacum, published in 1928, is a highly reputable Syriac dictionary. However, its Latin language and the ordering of words according to triliteral Semitic roots make its use difficult for most students and scholars. This revised edition by Sokoloff renders meanings in English, arranges words alphabetically, and includes many useful tools on a CD.

Originally published in two volumes, this edition of the Arabic translation of the Pentateuch stands as one of Lagarde’s lasting contributions to biblical scholarship. Critical editions make frequent reference to this work. This Gorgias Press edition includes both volumes in one. Included are two translations of Genesis into Arabic, along with a single version of the remaining pentateuchal books, also in Arabic. The first translation of Genesis represents the tradition of the Paris Polyglot, translated directly from the Hebrew, while the second is a cantena text from the Syriac tradition including material from St. Ephrem, Chrysostum, Jacob of Sarug, and Jacob of Edessa. It represents about two-thirds of the text of Genesis. The other pentateuchal books are similarly treated in Lagarde’s study, providing a valuable text-critical tool and easy access to the Arabic versions of the material. Part of Lagarde’s immense output on the textual issues of the Bible, this study will prove its worth with continued usage.

Paul Anton de Lagarde (1827-1891) was a biblical scholar and student of ancient languages. Having studied at Berlin, Halle, London, and Paris, he had a wide exposure to international thought. He eventually taught at Göttingen. Despite his participation in the anti-Semitism of his day, he was a gifted student of Semitic languages. His voluminous linguistic works are still recognized for their insights into oriental languages. He made important contributions to the study of Syriac, Aramaic, Arabic, Hebrew, and Coptic, as well as Greek and Latin.
