Dialogue poems, as the name implies, are poetic conversations between literary characters, often historical personages. Four poems are included in this collection; in the namesake piece of this volume the dialogue is between Mary and Gabriel, the angel of the annunciation. The other dialogues are between Mary and Joseph, Mary and the Magi, and Mary and the Gardener. Jacob of Sarug (451-521) was a prolific writer of the Syriac Church and was known as "the flute of the Holy Spirit and the harp of the believing church". Sebastian Brock gives the Syriac edition of six homilies written by Jacob: on the birth of our Lord; on the baptism of our Lord; on the Great Lent; on Palm Sunday; on Good Friday; on Easter Sunday. The text is based on an ancient manuscripts preserved in London and dated 609. |
|  | Eight Syriac Mimre On Biblical Themes by
Sebastian Brock gives in this text six poems (mimre) on various Old and New Testament themes. The texts go back to the fifth or sixth century and their authorship is mostly unknown, although one may be by Saint Ephrem. The mimre are: one on the murder of Abel (Genesis 4); one on Abraham and Sara in Egypt (Genesis 12); two on Abraham and Isaac (Genesis 22); one on the prophet Elijah (I Kings 17); one on Mary and Joseph (Matthew 1:19); one on the sinful woman (Luke 7: 16-50). Each poem is given with an introduction (also in Syriac). |

Originally published in two volumes, this edition of the Arabic translation of the Pentateuch stands as one of Lagarde’s lasting contributions to biblical scholarship. Critical editions make frequent reference to this work. This Gorgias Press edition includes both volumes in one. Included are two translations of Genesis into Arabic, along with a single version of the remaining pentateuchal books, also in Arabic. The first translation of Genesis represents the tradition of the Paris Polyglot, translated directly from the Hebrew, while the second is a cantena text from the Syriac tradition including material from St. Ephrem, Chrysostum, Jacob of Sarug, and Jacob of Edessa. It represents about two-thirds of the text of Genesis. The other pentateuchal books are similarly treated in Lagarde’s study, providing a valuable text-critical tool and easy access to the Arabic versions of the material. Part of Lagarde’s immense output on the textual issues of the Bible, this study will prove its worth with continued usage.
Paul Anton de Lagarde (1827-1891) was a biblical scholar and student of ancient languages. Having studied at Berlin, Halle, London, and Paris, he had a wide exposure to international thought. He eventually taught at Göttingen. Despite his participation in the anti-Semitism of his day, he was a gifted student of Semitic languages. His voluminous linguistic works are still recognized for their insights into oriental languages. He made important contributions to the study of Syriac, Aramaic, Arabic, Hebrew, and Coptic, as well as Greek and Latin.
