One of the great Islamic scholars of the ninth and tenth centuries, Abu Gafar Muhammad ib Garir, also known as at-Tabari, is known for his voluminous writings. Perhaps the greatest work he composed was his massive Annals, a set that comes to at least thirteen volumes in modern editions. This booklet, however, contains only selections from this monumental undertaking with the intention of providing a learning tool for students. The text is edited and annotated by M. J. de Goeje, a noted scholar of Arabic. The purpose of the publication was to introduce beginning students to primary source material for the study of Arabic. To facilitate the learning of the language, a substantial glossy is appended to the Arabic texts, offering the necessary material to begin work on this important text.
Michael Jan de Goeje (1836-1909) was a Dutch Orientalist. He earned his doctorate at the University of Leiden where he later became professor of Arabic. His many editions of Arabic texts are still held in high regard today.
