Damophon of Messene was a sculptor of the Hellenistic period who concentrated on statues of gods and goddesses and was known in antiquity for restoring the colossal Zeus of Pheidias at Olympia. Thallon's article establishes the now-accepted date for Damophon by a careful reading of his literary doxography and also comparison of his surviving works to others of his time. This piece is useful for an understanding of why Damophon's date was so difficult to determine and also as a study in the m ethology of dating ancient art and named artists.
