Given the apologetic motivations that so often accompany the records of theological disputes, it is often difficult to distinguish the actual course of historical events from the polemic presentations of those events. Thus, when multiple accounts of a set of historical events exist, it is not surprising to find discrepancies between those accounts. While varying accounts produce difficulties for reconstructing historical details, the discovery of sources containing diverse accounts can provide invaluable insight into otherwise unknown perspectives. It is in this context that we can appreciate the value of the historical accounts of two provincial synods preserved in the writings of Catholicos Timothy I. Timothy’s accounts of the events provide a unique perspective into the continuing christological controversies among Syriac-speaking Christians in the late eighth-century. Timothy’s records of the synods offer valuable insights in comparison with the later accounts of Abdisho and Bar Hebraeus.
