The various stories collected as part of the broad stream of Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles have a complex translational and transmission history. As a result, the various translations of these stories are important because they may contain early strata of the texts. In an attempt to make one such translation more available, Paul Vetter presents here a critical text of the Armenian version of the Acts of Peter and Paul, collated from four manuscripts. Vetter briefly describes the two textual traditions found in the four Armenian manuscripts, and then discusses the possible explanations for the differences both among the Armenian manuscripts and between the Armenian and Greek traditions. The variants found in the Armenian manuscripts present difficulties in constructing a critical Armenian version. Vetter includes a short description of his methodology for comparing the texts and making decisions with regard to variant readings. The Aremenian text that Vetter presents is somewhat of an eclectic version, but Vetter includes a critical apparatus with variant readings from the four manuscripts. The Armenian text is also supplemented with a Greek translation. | |
