Theological treatises with the dual intention of providing an apology for the author’s beliefs and a polemic against the beliefs of others were common in late antiquity and the medieval period. Franz Cöln presents here the text of one such treatise defending the beliefs of the Jacobite Church. The text is anonymous, and though it exists in several manuscripts, none of the manuscripts attributes the text to a specific author. Cöln offers a brief discussion of authorship, but focuses more on the time period in which the text was most likely composed. Cöln presents the text of this treatise in Arabic, though the majority of the manuscripts preserve the text in Garshuni script. The text is accompanied by a critical apparatus with variants from the available manuscripts and a German translation.
