Throughout the corpus of Christian literature, there is no shortage of descriptions of the Holy lands from various travelers throughout various stages of history. Yet, despite the prevalence of such descriptions, each offers a unique view into the history of Jerusalem and Palestine, depending on the time period in which it was written and the sources used in its composition. The text of the present description, preserved in Arabic, comes from some time after the 17th century, but it also appears to be a recension of an already existing text. In the introduction to the text, Anton Baumstark discusses the possible history of the text, including its relationship to a not well preserved Greek version, authorship, and dating. Baumstark accompanies the Arabic text with a Latin translation.
