The namesake of the volume, Timothy’s apology for Christianity, is an eighth-century manuscript and one of the earliest documents concerning Christianity’s relationship with Islam. The Lament of the Virgin is Mary’s sadness at the empty tomb; in this piece she is conflated with Mary Magdalene. The Martyrdom of Pilate presents Pontius Pilate as a saint and lays out his spiritual accomplishments that are crowned by his martyrdom. |

| | A Grammar of the Malayalam Language by Joseph Peet Based on years of personal experience in India, Joseph Peet’s grammar of Malayalam was the first attempt by a western scholar to document the language. Set out like a classical grammar of the period, Peet begins with an introduction to the language and the orthography. The parts of speech are each treated, followed by an account of the syntax. One of the official languages of India, Malayalam is spoken by about 37 million individuals, mostly in the state of Kerala in the southern part of the nation. For the historian interested in the history of the study of Malayalam, this grammar is a special find. |
| | St. Cyril of Alexandria, A New Testament Exegete by Lois Farag This study portrays Cyril of Alexandria as exegete and theologian through an examination of his Commentary on the Gospel John. It begins with an attempt to place Cyril and his commentary within their context. This work argues that Cyril wrote his Commentary on the Gospel of John early in his writing career, almost a decade before becoming bishop. Cyril’s commentary on the Johannine Gospel reveals his exegetical method and his strong Trinitarian theology. The commentary also focuses on the nature and work of the Holy Spirit: the indwelling of the Spirit is the beginning of the newness of life. |

Shortly after Vasco da Gama reached India by sea in 1498, an Indian priest named Joseph boarded a ship in India that was bound for Europe. Joseph's tales of his native India were recorded by a European. In his narratives, he described the socio-economic and cultural life of India as well as the geography of many places including Cranganore, Calcutta, Cochin, Gujarat, Cambay, and others. During the 16th century, some 20 editions of Joseph's narratives were published in Latin, Italian, German, French and Dutch. In India In 1500 AD: The Narratives of Joseph the Indian, Antony Vallavanthara gives a critical study of the rare historical documents that lay behind the narratives. Table of Contents
