Shortly after Vasco da Gama reached India by sea in 1498, an Indian priest named Joseph boarded a ship in India that was bound for Europe. Joseph's tales of his native India were recorded by a European. In his narratives, he described the socio-economic and cultural life of India as well as the geography of many places including Cranganore, Calcutta, Cochin, Gujarat, Cambay, and others. During the 16th century, some 20 editions of Joseph's narratives were published in Latin, Italian, German, French and Dutch.
