St. Cyril of Alexandria, A New Testament Exegete by Lois Farag
This study portrays Cyril of Alexandria as exegete and theologian through an examination of his Commentary on the Gospel John. It begins with an attempt to place Cyril and his commentary within their context. This work argues that Cyril wrote his Commentary on the Gospel of John early in his writing career, almost a decade before becoming bishop. Cyril’s commentary on the Johannine Gospel reveals his exegetical method and his strong Trinitarian theology. The commentary also focuses on the nature and work of the Holy Spirit: the indwelling of the Spirit is the beginning of the newness of life.

Tell Halaf by Baron Max von Oppenheim
The site of Tell Halaf was located by Baron von Oppenheim while on a mission to survey the land for the Baghdad Railway. The Baron returned some years later to excavate the mound, and this monograph is his considered statement of the site’s importance. Setting the stage with a narrative of the discovery of the tell, von Oppenheim proceeds to describe the structures, monumental statuary and smaller objects recovered from the dig. Lavishly illustrated with over 85 illustrations and maps, this volume contains a storehouse of knowledge on ancient Syria, at that time part of the cultural continuum of Mesopotamia.

The study of music is often neglected in historical surveys, particularly with regard to the historical study of Christian traditions. Egon Wellesz argues that music is an important component in the cultural history of people and language, and therefore should not be ignored. In the present study, Wellesz presents a thorough discussion of the musical traditions of Ethiopic Christianity. Wellesz begins with a survey of literature on music in the Oriental tradition, and then provides a brief comparison of the features of Ethiopic music with that of other Eastern and Oriental traditions. Wellesz proceeds by discussing the signification of musical directions and the notation. Finally, Wellesz provides examples of Ethiopic music by including pictures of a few manuscripts containing musical texts, transcribing the Ethiopic text of those manuscripts, and providing a transliterated song with the Ethiopic musical notations. This significant study serves both as an introduction to Ethiopic music for beginners and as an important reference work for experts.
