The publication of the Ethiopic text and translation of the Hexameron of Pseudo-Epiphanius by Ernst Trumpp at the end of the nineteenth century stirred quite a bit of academic interest in the text, its authorship, and its transmission. However, not every scholar agreed with Trumpp’s assertions about the text, or even his handling of the sources. In the present article, August Haffner critiques Trumpp’s publication on several counts, but the primary issue at stake is the fact that there are two sources for the text, one in Ethiopic and one in Arabic, and that Trumpp favors the Ethiopic text. Haffner provides the Ethiopic and Arabic texts for several passages, frequently accompanied by Trumpp’s translation, in order to illustrate his critiques of Trumpp’s use of the sources.
