Ephrem the Syrian was one of the most influential writers of the Syriac tradition as evidenced by the many pseudepigraphic writings attributed to him and the translation of many of his works into Greek and other languages. One well-known work attributed to Ephrem that survives in both Greek and Arabic translation is the “sermon against laughter.” In the present article, Willi Heffening publishes the Arabic text of this sermon and accompanies it with a German translation and critical apparatus including variant readings from the manuscripts containing the Greek text. In his introduction to the text, Heffening discusses the manuscripts used in the collated text and discusses orthographic and translational issues present within the Arabic version. Heffening also includes two pictures of the Arabic manuscript that includes the sermon.
