| | Commentary of Theodore of Mopsuestia on the Lord's Prayer and on the Sacraments of Baptism and the Eucharist by Alphonse Mingana The Commentary of Theodore of Mopsuestia on the Lord’s Prayer and on the Sacraments of Baptism and the Eucharist is an important witness to the development of Christianity. Theodore (c. 350-428) was clearly the most important biblical scholar of his age. In a series of six homilies Theodore here addresses the Lord’s Prayer as a springboard to discuss what actually constitutes prayer. His homilies on the sacraments are essential witnesses to the historical development of these sacraments. His work here is basically a commentary on the text of the liturgy, an awareness of the centrality of the sacraments to the life of the church in his age. |
| | Commentary of Theodore of Mopsuestia on the Nicene Creed by Alphonse Mingana The Commentary of Theodore of Mopsuestia on the Nicene Creed is an important document of an instrumental age in the development of Christianity. Theodore (c. 350-428) was clearly the most important biblical scholar of his age. While his theology eventually led to his loss of favor among some branches of the church, Theodore was at least partially responsible for three church councils held to deal with his ideas, including those of Ephesus and Chalcedon. Mingana has published here, as Woodbrooke Studies 5, for the first time a document that had previously been lost and which contains Theodore’s observations on the outcome of the Council of Nicaea, the Nicene Creed. |
| | The History of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the History of the Likeness of Christ by E. Budge The publication of ancient Syriac documents was a passion for Budge. In this two-volume set, volume 1 in Syriac and volume 2 in English, Budge offers the two documents entitled “The History of the Blessed Virgin Mary” and “The History of the Likeness of Christ which the Jews of Tiberias Made to Mock at.” These two manuscripts represent the genre of New Testament apocrypha and originate in perhaps the late fourth century. |
| | Acts of Martyrs and Saints by Paul Bedjan One of the classic works of hagiography, Paul Bedjan’s seven volume work on collected acts of martyrs and saints is an invaluable Syraic resource. Containing many foundational stories of early Christianity, this work is approved by the Roman Catholic Church and is highly valued in the Syrian Orthodox tradition. |

Sebastian Euringer publishes here the Ethiopic text of an Anaphora to the Virgin Mary. In his introduction to the text, Euringer notes that the Ethiopic liturgy dedicated to Mary has been edited, published, and translated previously, but notes that these publications were not widely available and thus, relatively little was known about this Ethiopic tradition. Thus, Euringer attempts to make this text more widely available, both in the original Ethiopic text and in a German translation. For the Ethiopic text, Euringer uses one manuscript as a base text, but provides a critical apparatus with variant readings from various other manuscripts. In his introduction, Euringer lists the previous works that have been published on this Ethiopic liturgical tradition and discusses the manuscripts used in the present work. Euringer also includes notes containing explanations for translational and editorial decisions. Table of Contents
