Fevzi Altug returned to his native Crimea from Istanbul in 1918 to help in the establishment of a new Tatar republic. In a series of six articles, Thornbush describes the Russian Civil War in the Crimea as witness by Altug and the hardships endured by the Tatar population under the occupation of the White and Red Armys. In particular, there are accounts of the famine of early 1920s and the actions taken against leading Tatars which would ultimately see Altug flee the Soviet Union with his family. The texts are political memoires rather than a personal account of Altug and his family’s daily lives. The translation and critical edition of Fevzi Altug’s writings are supplemented by a short biography and a bibliography of his publications.
