In Praise of the New Knighthood by Bernard of Clairvaux
The monk and the knight—the two quintessentially medieval European heroes—were combined in the Knights Templar, men who took the monastic vows and defended the holy places and pilgrims. With characteristic eloquence, Bernard of Clairvaux voices the cleric's view of the knights, warfare, and the conquest of the Holy Land in five chapters on the knight's vocation. Then, in another eight chapters the abbot who never visited the Holy Land provides a spiritual tour of the pilgrimage sites guarded by this 'new kind of knighthood.'

The Early History of Syria and Palestine by Lewis Paton
Although written before the modern discoveries that define Ancient Near Eastern studies today, Paton’s historic foray into the history of Syria and Palestine served to start a continuing discussion that remains active today. Covering the Babylonian, Aramaean, Egyptian, Hittite, and Assyrian empires, Paton demonstrates what was known of the history of the region with the limited resources of nineteenth-century explorations.

Mohammed and Islam by Ignaz Goldziher
Ignaz Goldziher was a pre-eminent scholar of Islam during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This book encapsulates his own lifetime of work and provides something of an historical commentary on his epoch in the Western academic study of Islam. One of its strengths is that Goldziher’s investigation of historical development probes into underlying religious motivations and allied theological issues. The book quickly became a classic of its day. It remains a classic that, in our day, is well worth re-visiting as it can still inform our understanding of contemporary Islam, whose roots lie in all that Goldziher covers.

Süleyman Demirci’s work on relations between the capital and the provinces fits into the greater debate over whether the Ottoman state experienced a long period of decline culminating in its collapse at the end of World War I. Ottoman historians have for some time questioned the assumption that Ottoman power peaked in the sixteenth century and that from then on it was all downhill. The seventeenth century, the focus of Demirci’s study, is therefore a good starting point, more so since several important events – from the Celâli revolts to the second siege of Vienna – occurred in this period. Demirci looks at the practice of avâriz, or extraordinary, taxation in the central Anatolian province of Karaman. Demirici is interested in the central state’s flexibility and initiative in responding to challenges that it faced and thus examine how centre-periphery relations during the seventeenth century.
