The right of the parish clerk, if deemed suitable for his position, that is he must be "literate, musical, and able to teach the young," to read the Epistle prescribed for the day of service is reinforced in this work. Atchley covers the history of the issue from Justin Martyr and the Apostolic Constitutions to Amalar and Gregory IX. English legislation and practice from the pseudo-Egbertine Pontifical letter through the legislation of Edward VI and Elizabeth, and the visitations of Grindal and Laud are examined.
