The author, who originally came to India as a missionary for the Free Church of Scotland, here offers a history of Syriac Christianity in all its varieties in India. The first part of the book is mostly concerned with early legends of Christianity in India and St. Thomas, including a look at the problems of identifying what exactly is meant by “India” in the literature of Late Antiquity. He then studies, in turn, the “Nestorian,” Roman, and “Jacobite” presence of Christianity in the region. The last chapter examines questions about the church in India and the changing face of the country as it neared the end of the 19th century. An index of names and subjects concludes the volume. The work will be of interest to all those studying Christianity in India and the spread of Syriac Christianity. | |
