In 1888 P. Bedjan published the Syriac text of the travels of two Chinese Christians, Mar Yahbalaha and Rabban Sawma, to Baghdad in his Histoire de Mar Jab-Alaha, patriarche, et de Raban Sauma (reprint available from Gorgias Press), an English translation of which by Budge then appeared in 1928. In this work, Hilgenfeld provides a thorough textual review of Bedjan’s edition. He points out and discusses, with exact references to Bedjan’s text, what he believes to be omissions and later additions, as well as his disagreements with Bedjan’s vocalization and punctuation. The book concludes with a tabulated list of corrections. This study takes its place beside Bedjan’s text and Budge’s translation of this important resource for 13th century eastern Christianity.
