This volume presents the Syriac text of the legend of St. Barbara and a detailed examination of the Greek versions of the story. The introduction first records the outline of the legend. The Syriac text, from Bedjan's Acta martyrum et sanctorum, vol. 3, based on two Paris manuscripts, is translated with notes into German, including comparative observations with the Greek text. The next sections of the work deal more thoroughly with comparing the Greek versions with each other and with the Syriac text. An appendix contains, in an annotated German translation, the martyrdom narratives of the twins Cosmas and Damian. This book will be of interest to any reader concerned with early martyrdoms and hagiography.
