The Physiologus, originally in Greek, is a collection of texts in natural history, dealing mostly with animals. It became very popular and was translated into Syriac, among other languages. The present work contains a much expanded version of the work, but still deals mostly with animals. The Syriac text is printed in a handwritten vocalized script. The introduction covers in detail the form of the stories and the connection of the Syriac to the Greek, as well as the probable sources for the expanded portions. The notes to the German translation indicate parallels in ancient literature. There is a table of contents for both the text and the translation, and a number of corrections to the text were supplied by G. Hoffmann. Students of comparative literature and, in particular, fables and moral literature, not to mention Syriac readers generally, will find this volume of interest.
