A survey of Egypt by the distinguished English student of Arabic, the grandnephew of Edward Lane. Six steel engravings, and over a hundred wood-cuts are used to illustrate Egyptian culture, society and inhabitants. Stanley Lane-Poole examines Muslim influence and architecture, and the European influences under the Khedives and the recent English conquest. An appendix on the condition of women, which Lane-Poole sees as the great flaw in Egyptian society, highlights his skepticism of its future remedy.
