Shem'on of Rev Ardashir's (7th or 8th cent.) work on family and hereditary law was written in Persian—in which it is now lost—but it was fortunately translated into Syriac, in which language it was to become important as a legal text in the Church of the East. The work, in 22 sections, is in question-and-answer format. Introductory chapters of the study deal with questions on Shem'on's work and on what is known of the author and his environment. This study, edition, and translation of this important Church of the East text will be of interest to church historians and students and scholars of Syriac.
