Barhebraeus' Book of the Dove is a manual for monks divided according to body, soul, and spirit, with an additional section of spiritual autobiography. A.J. Wensinck's (1882-1939) English translation of the work, together with his translation of Isaac of Nineveh's treatises (also available from Gorgias), is his most significant work in Syriac studies. The translation is based on Bedjan's Syriac text (also available from Gorgias Press). Wensinck's substantial introduction (123 pages) discusses Barhebraeus' sources, this work's relationship to his other works, Greek and Syriac ascetic literature, and Muslim sources, Al-Ghazali in particular. Also helpful is a list of technical terms in Syriac, Arabic, and Greek, followed by an index to the book. This reprint of Wensinck's work, which makes this important text available in English, with an introduction providing abundant background material, will be appreciated by a wide variety or readers.
