Henri Pognon, during his many years as French consul at Baghdad and Aleppo, traveled throughout the Middle East and collected inscriptions from the places he visited. This impressive volume is a collection of these inscriptions, mostly Syriac, but also two in Akkadian and some in Aramaic. They are accompanied with detailed geographical, historical, and epigraphical descriptions, as well as French translations, which also have a great number of grammatical and lexical annotations. The book concludes with a glossary to the Zakir inscription, a small Aramaic glossary, a supplement to Payne Smith’s Thesaurus Syriacus with words and forms from these inscriptions, a geographical Syriac glossary, and a full index in French, mostly of proper names. Drawings of the inscriptions, along with some photographs, are given in 42 plates. Pognon’s work is so full of informations that Semitic language scholars, epigraphers, and historians, as well as more general readers interested in monasteries and churches in these regions, will all be pleased with the volume. | |
