A collection of Chinese sources on Central Asia during the Mongol Empire, and related material by the distinguished Baltic Sinologist. This two in one volume set contains five Chinese sources in the first volume: the comments of Yelü Ch'u-ts'ai, Genghis Khan's minister on his travels, the reports of an envoy from the Kin emperor (Wu-ku-sun) and a Taoist monk (Ch'ang Ch'un) on their missions to the Mongol court, a messenger from Mangu Khan to Hulagu (Ch'ang Te, whose report includes a survey of the Middle East), and Yelü Hi liang, great-grandson of Yelü Ch'u-ts'ai, on his travels in Central Asia in 1260-62. It also contains a bibliographic survey of Chinese literature of this period on the Mongols, Western Asia, and Europe, and an account of the Mongol invasion of Europe. The second volume transliterates and indentifies the place names on a Chinese map from the last decades of the Yuan dynasty, which covers the possessions of the Mongol Emperors, with an appendix on the Ming names for the European barbarians arriving by sea.
