Belgian scholar and Bollandist Jean-Baptiste Abbeloos (1836-1906) here presents a critical edition, with Latin translation, of the Acts of Mar Qardagh, who died a martyr under Shapur II. The editor took his text chiefly from an East Syriac manuscript copied for him by the Chaldean Archbishop Diyarbekir, Abdisho‘ Khayyath, and containing a large collection of saints’ lives and martyrdoms, the full list of which is given by Abbeloos. A running narrative synopsis accompanies the margin of the Latin translation, and an index, mostly of proper names, concludes the work. The edition of this unique text remains a standard for students of hagiography and a significant resource for those interested in Christianity in the Sassanid Empire.
