The remarks on numbers are notes which the author made while collecting from the great Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. E. Washburn Hopkins intends to present the numbers in the Mahabharata and their significance. He intends to do this through displaying the following topics: the form of epics numbers, how numbers are handled in arithmetical processes, how space is measured, time-words and methods of measuring time, syntax of time expressions, time-phrases, age, and epic dates. Various problems, both historical and philological, serve to relieve the dryness of the subject, but these will be touched only briefly, as the author’s chief object is to get data together.
