The Malabar region of southern India is known to students of Eastern Christianity for its sizable Christian population and heritage there. Panikkar’s ethnographic work, here in its 2nd edition (1st ed., 1900), describes not only the Christians of Malabar, but in fact the other habitants as well. As the author states, his purpose is “to present in a brief compass some of the salient phases of social and religious life in Malabar.” The work, therefore, beckons the interest of every student of India.
