Founded in 1881 by the noted Hebraist and biblical scholar Bernhard Stade, Zeitschrift für die Alttestamentliche Wissenschaft was and remains a premier journal of historical-critical scholarship on the Hebrew Bible. In its pages appeared many of the most famous names in biblical scholarship and related fields, including Karl Budde, Franz Delitzsch, Gustav Dalman, Arthur Marmorstein, Max Margolis, Eduard Meyer, Eberhard Nestle, Theodor Nöldeke, Adolf Schlatter, Rudolf Smend, and many others. As this listing shows, the journal also encompassed studies in Semitic linguistics and post-biblical Judaism and rabbinics; it also published articles on Islamic material related to the Bible. Originally rooted in Protestant scholarship, from early on it published work by Jewish scholars and is now ecumenical in its authorship. In the four decades represented in these volumes, ZAW published work representing all the major trends in the scholarship of the period, including the History of Religions school and the Wissenschaft des Judentums.
