The Image of the Turk in Europe is the product of an extensive research project at the Centre for Comparative European Studies at Bogaziçi University. Begun in 1997, the project resulted in this volume, a collection of twenty-two articles written by the thirty scholars involved in the third workshop held at Bogaziçi in 1999. While much attention has been given to the image of “the Turk” during the era of the Ottoman Empire, perceptions of “the new Turk” of the Turkish Republic remained somewhat more of a mystery. The shift which accompanied the modernisation of the new country, the beginning of Turkish migration to European countries and the development of relations between Turkey and the European Union all contributed greatly to European views of Turks during the twentieth century. Under Nedret Kuran Burçoglu's editorship, the book has been divided into sections dealing with the image of the Turk in Northern Europe, Central Europe and the Balkans.
