In this article, the author attempts to put together a biography of al-Ghazzali, the Muslim theologian, based on numerous sources. He helped Muslim theology take its final form. Al-Ghazzali saved the Church of Muhammad from scholastic decrepitude. He was persecuted in his life as a heretic, and is now considered the greatest doctor of the Muslim Church. Al-Ghazzali was a trained theologian and lawyer, which helped him take over mysticism with its intuitionalism and spiritual life into the dry body of theology, and gave the Church of Islam a fresh term of life. It was by his influence that Sufism attained a firm and assured position within the Church of Islam. Al-Ghazzali gave a place in Islam to the emotional religious life. It is the spirituality real and living side of his character and work that constitutes his abiding interest for scholars. Table of Contents
