The author is startled to learn supposed converts to Christianity are invited to take sacraments after a very short amount of time. He briefly describes how various sects treat this situation. Ultimately, the author advises “a suitable period of probation” before church membership. It is in the best interests of the candidate such that they have time to reflect on a serious decision, and it benefits the church to stay pure. A number of reverends are quoted in opposition of hasty admissions, as are a number of church judicatories. Those who object to this probationary period would say that because joining a church is the duty of a convert and all duty must be performed as quickly as possible, converts should not wait. The author refutes this with a logical proof. The author likewise asserts that the health of the church trumps that of the individual. Another objection is that the apostles did not wait to join the Lord’s Supper. The author claims that the one instance of immediate entry is not proof of precedent, and the circumstances that led to their congregation differ from contemporary groups.
