Because the history of the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch diverged from the Greek and Latin traditions, little is known of this ancient sect of Christianity among Western Christians. This lack of knowledge is likely the result of the omission of the non-Chalcedonian traditions from works of Church History in the Western tradition. In an attempt to rectify this lack of knowledge of the Syrian Orthodox tradition, Hanna Aydin offers here a history of the Syrian Orthodox Church from its beginning to the present day. Aydin begins this historical overview with the Christian mission to Edessa, the home of the Syriac tradition, and the Syrian Christians under the Roman Empire and concludes with the ecumenical movement of the twentieth century. On several occasions, Aydin provides the texts of of key documents mentioned in the survey. Table of Contents
