The first edition of the life's work of the early Orientalist and academician; completed and edited by Galland after his death: An encyclopedia of the East, in the modern sense, strongest on the Islamic world, where it draws (as Galland's preface says) on Kitab Celebi's Arabic encyclopedia, and on numerous other sources. One of the early experiments with alphabetical order in Western languages, it follows its Arabic sources in putting DH, K, and TH at the end. (This was not always congenial to contemporary readers, despite the detailed and curious instructions on how to read the history of a dynasty entry by entry.)
