Three works of Christian Arabic literature, two of them translated into English. The Book of the Rolls (Kitab al Magall) attributes itself to Clement of Rome, like many apocrypha; it tells the secret history of Mary's descent from David and Adam, drawn from secret rolls of genealogy preserved for the elect. (The slips in its chronology are discussed in the helpful and extensive notes.) The second is the story of Solomon, his vizier, Jesus son of Sirach and the vizier's wife Aphikia, a wisdom tale that ends well; the third is the martyrdom of Cyprian and Justa, in Syriac and Greek; there is a translation in the works of Gibson's sister, Agnes Lewis. | |
