Anne Mézin’s work sheds light on the relations between the French and the Ottomans in Illyria (the Western Balkan coast) and the Adriatic Sea during the time of Napoleon. The book is based on the so-called “Donzelot Papers”, a set of documents discovered in a Parisian house in 1893 which had belonged to the French governor of the Ionian Island between 1808 and 1814. Mézin’s work gives us a look at the French perspective on the “Eastern Question” of the early-nineteenth century, when France, under Napoleon, made a short push into the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Mézin has edited and annotated the “Donzelot Papers” for publication.
