The lives of two leaders of the Syriac Church, bishops of Tagrit [now more famous as Tikrit] and the East. Ahoudemmeh comnverted the Arabs to Syriac Christianity during the persecutions of Justinian and Justin II; he was martyred whille preaching among the Zoroastrian Persians, for (it is said) converting the son of Chosroes himself to Christianity. Marouta was bishop of Tagrit after the Muslim conquest; his holy life is equally edifying, but without so much incident. Both lives will be interesting to the historian for the acts of these men and the picture of daily life; to the student of hagiography for the formulae which are imposed on the history, from the recognition of sainthood in youth to the speech at death. This volume also contains a treatise of Ahoudemmeh on the nature of mankind, the relation of soul and body, the freedom of the will, and the unity of the person and his acts.
