Perhaps the ultimate Renaissance compendium, Hakluyt's book contains every narrative of a voyage or journey he could possibly tie to England, from the journey of Helena to find the True Cross and legendary voyages of King Arthur to the voyages of Drake and Raleigh, the battle against the Armada, and Queen Elizabeth's embassies to Moscovy and Ethiopia. Richard Hakluyt, who was Robert Cecil's chaplain, wrote his book both to encourage the new age of exploration, and as a store of information for those persuaded to engage in it. The texts, primary when Hakluyt could find them, are classified by destination: the northern Seas, the Mediterranean, Africa and the road to India and China, and various destinations in the Americas; when Hakluyt did not find them in English (as with Procopius in Latin), he gives the foreign text and translates it. All three volumes in one; here is God's plenty. | |
