In Islam, Muhammad is the great prophet who was announced by the writers of the Hebrew Bible. Muslims believe that it was definitely predicted in the Hebrew Scriptures that this prophet should come from the offspring of Ishmael, and be supreme over all the peoples of the world. This belief was so important that many of the Jewish converts to Islam have felt they were performing valuable service to their new faith if they affirmed passages and arguments from their scriptures in support of the proposition. The Kitab Masalik an-Nazar is the work of Sa’id ibn Hasan of Alexandria, which furnishes an important and interesting illustration of this attempt. Sa’id was an Alexandrian Hew who converted to Islam in 1298 C.E. This article also sets forth an Arabic copy of this treatise, a translation, and notes of this text.
