The christological disputes related to the Arian controversy dominated the content of fourth century Christian writings. Indeed, it was largely through the writings of a few influential authors that the Nicene expression of faith emerged as the triumphant expression of orthodoxy. In light of this phenomenon, Paul S. Russell presents here a comparison of two fourth century authors from two different traditions that wrote influential and important works against the Arian position. The subjects of the present study, Gregory Nazianzus and Ephrem the Syrian, were near contemporaries and were both highly influential within their respective traditions, so they provide a unique point of comparison for the treatment of Arianism in different traditions. Russell conducts this study by comparing these two authors with respect to the following categories: use of Scripture, choice of Scripture, theological vocabulary, methods of argument, and christological teaching.
