In more than 600 entries it covers the Syriac heritage from its beginnings in the first centuries of the Common Era up to the present day. Special attention is given to authors, literary works, scholars, and locations that are associated with the Classical Syriac tradition. Within this tradition, the diversity of Syriac Christianity is highlighted as well as Syriac Christianity’s broader literary and historical contexts, with major entries devoted to Greek and Arabic authors and more general themes, such as Syriac Christianity’s contacts with Judaism and Islam, and with Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopian, and Georgian Christianities. |

Even though the “Golden Age” of Syriac literature occurred between the fourth and seventh centuries, there is a remarkable amount of writings and Syriac that have survived from all periods of the Syriac tradition, beginning in the second century and proceeding all the way to the present. In the present volume, Sebastian Brock provides an outline and overview of this history of literary production in the Syriac language. Brock divides this history into six distinct periods: 1) second to third century, 2) fourth century, 3) fifth to mid-seventh century, 4) seventh to thirteenth century, 5) fourteenth to nineteenth century, and 6) twentieth and twenty-first century. Brock begins by providing an overview of the important writings and authors in each of these distinct periods, and then surveys the literature as it pertains to particular topics: Bible, exegesis, liturgy, canon law, monastic literature, chronicles, and secular literature. Brock then provides a select bibliography for the study of Syriac literature, and he concludes by providing excerpts from the most important Syriac authors of each period. Table of Contents
