Gregory Bar Hebraeus is one of the most important writers of the later Syriac tradition. His many extant writings include historical, theological, philological and exegetical works. One of Bar Hebraeus’s most well known works is his commentary on the whole Bible, and this work is the subject of the present study by Johann Göttsberger. Göttsberger begins with a general discussion of the life and works of Bar Hebraeus and proceeds by providing an in-depth analysis of the text of Bar Hebraeus’s commentary, focusing on issues of text criticism and exegesis. Göttsberger carefully considers the source of Bar Hebraeus’s scripture citations (i.e. Peshitta, Syro-Hexapla, Philoxenian, Harclean, etc.) Göttsberger continues with lexicographical and grammatical observations and concludes with general conclusions about the work of Bar Hebraeus. Scholars interested in biblical exegesis in the later Syriac tradition will benefit greatly from this work.
