From the Journal des Savants: A favorable review and summary, with additional evidence, of an essay by the noted Hebraist and biblical scholar Bernhard Stade, which was the first complete survey of the case that the Hebrew Javan is the eponym of the Greeks, and that they were widely known in the East by similar names (in India, for example as Yawanas), which derive from the old form of Ionia, which had a digamma, a w sound, before the omicron.
