One of the three contemporary accounts of the Albigensian Crusade, this poem (in rhyming stanzas of irregular length, is by two authors. The first portion is by William of Tudela, one of the Crusaders, and a follower of Baldwin, the rebellious brother of the Count of Toulouse; it covers the war through 1213 and was written no more than a year later; the second portion, written about 1219, is by a learned poet who has not included his identity, but who sympathises with the Occitan suffering under the Northern rule (although not with the Albigensian heretics); this is the only surviving express of the Occitan viewpoint. These volumes comprise the Provencal text with copious critical notes, a Provencal glossary, a translation into modern French, and an introduction which surveys the other sources on the Crusade, the history of the manuscript, the nature and reliability of the authors, and the dialect and versification of the two halves. | |
