This book comprises a selection of essays by Professor Ronald C. Jennings, one of the pioneers in the Ottoman social history, on the social and economic history of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th and 17th centuries. Professor Jennings is the first researcher who realized the potentials of Ottoman kadi registers and studied them to expose the lives of inferior members of the Ottoman society, such as craftsmen, women, non-Muslims, slaves and freedmen, who are generally under-represented in written evidence. Articles in this book focus on three localities, Kayseri, Cyprus and Trabzon, to discuss various aspects of the Ottoman society including economic relations, law, population and minorities. Not only a comprehensive picture of the Ottoman social life in the 16th and 17th centuries is presented, but also many preconceptions regarding the Ottoman social history are questioned.
